EUROPCOM: Communicating in Europe – Communicating on Europe

The Committee of the Regions, the Flemish Region, the Walloon Region and various Belgian public sector bodies, together with the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission are joining forces to organise EUROPCOM, Europe's first conference on public sector communications. Bringing together communications experts from across Europe, EUROPCOM will provide a platform for professionals to exchange best practice and discuss current and future challenges for public sector communications.

The conference will be held in Brussels on 12-14 October 2010 during the Belgian EU Presidency, with sessions at the European Parliament and the Committee of the Regions. 400 participants are expected to attend the conference, including directors of communications working for national governments and local and regional authorities, experts, journalists, communicators for the European institutions and communications professionals working in the voluntary sector.

Participants will have the chance to present examples from their communications campaigns which link in with the two main themes: Communicating in Europe – Communicating on Europe. The event will also see the official launch of a dedicated social network for public sector communicators.

EUROPCOM's main aim is to explore the different ways in which communications professionals working at the EU institutions, national governments and regional and local authorities can communicate better with ordinary people. The following six subjects will be examined at the conference:

  • Making public communication more efficient and professional
  • Communicating about Europe at multiple levels of government
  • Communicating in ways that encourage public participation
  • Sustainability and communication
  • Relations with the press and the media
  • Branding states, regions, cities and municipalities
